Making Linguistics accessible and inclusive for all. Highlighting the power of language – and why we all need to know more about it.
Linguistics is the social and scientific study of language.
It’s important because language has the power to change
the world – but not enough people know that.
That’s where Inclusive Linguistics comes in.
My aim is to raise awareness about what Linguistics is, why language matters, and how to use language to make the world a better place.
The words we use reflect the world we choose.
“The words we use reflect the world we choose.”
Language is more powerful than most people will probably ever realise. Our words reflect who we are – from our values and beliefs, to our social and cultural identities.
Using inclusive language means using language that promotes equity and justice; language that does not discriminate, exclude or marginalise anyone. Language reproduces and enacts our social world, so using language that empowers and uplifts everyone has various, empirically proven benefits.
Through Linguistics, more people can begin to understand – and more importantly, harness – the magic of language. Linguistics is an underrated tool for social change. It helps us to understand the way we speak and how to use our language to campaign for justice. The Inclusive Linguistics project is a step in the direction of bringing Linguistics further into the social justice narrative.

About me
sophie frankpitt
Hello! My name is Sophie, and I’m a Linguistics undergraduate.
I’m studying my bachelor’s degree at the University of Warwick, and last year I studied Gender Studies & Linguistics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. I aim to study my Sociolinguistics postgraduate in the US.
I’m passionate about language and social justice, and I hope to bring Linguistics into the public eye. I use presentations, articles, poetry, and most things language-related to do so – because the magic of Linguistics is that it’s both a science and an art.
My goal is to make Linguistics more accessible and inclusive for anyone who wants to learn about language.
With my project, Inclusive Linguistics, I aim to engage people with the idea that language matters – in various different ways.
